Volunteer Social?

The first comment from a volunteer on this blog was about organising a social meet up. If this is a popular idea, you will need to arrange it amongst yourselves but I will try to come (if you’d like me to!). Perhaps you could set a time and place and see who turns up?!

Ferry

Take a boat trip around the Harbourside. You could combine this with a trip to the Industrial Museum (free); the SS Great Britain; the Watershed; the Arnolfini; or the Empire and Commonwealth Museum . See separate entries for details of these other attractions.

Time2Share discount: volunteers travel at child rate e.g. £2.80.

This is a good venue for a busy or curious child. It is also indoors so perfect for wet weekends. I would recommend only going to one section at a time, and coming back on a separate session to do the others.

You should be able to get into all the attractions free (say you’re a carer and show your Time2Share ID). The child you’re with can get an education rate, this is:

£4.45 for one attraction (e.g. Explore)

£7.50 for two attractions (e.g. Explore and Wildwalk)

£10.55 all 3 (Explore, Wildwalk and Imax)

I have discussed these discount directly with @Bristol, so let me know if they say anything different!

Recruiting New Volunteers

We generally find it tricky to recruit certain types of volunteers, for various reasons. Do you have any suggestions about how we could recruit:

  • male volunteers to match with teenage boys
  • bilingual volunteers for families where English is not their first language
  • volunteers on the outskirts of Bristol, especially South Bristol

Perhaps you have links with communities or organisations which could help us in this way? Can you think of any imaginative ways to target these types of potential volunteers? Maybe you have a friend or relative who would be great at volunteering?! As you know we try to match volunteers and children well, so some children end up waiting quite a while for a match. Any suggestions appreciated…
