We’ve won 20 tickets to Starlight Express next Thursday meet 7:15 pm at Bristol Hippodrome

Starlight Express

I’ve got good news – we’ve won 20 tickets to Starlight Express next Thursday 26th for the 7:30pm showing. The tickets will go to the first people who come forward (taking a disabled child or group member). It would obviously be ideal if volunteers could take their matched child, but if not a parent can come as a carer. This is also open to the groups. We may need extra volunteers, so contact me anyway if you’re matched child can’t make it. I will be there and I will meet those who get the tickets at the main entrance at 7:15pm. Please e-mail or phone ASAP to get your ticket! I will collect all the tickets from the Box Office on the night. There are also 5 extra tickets – we can negotiate the performance they’re used for. Let me know if you cannot make the specific time next Thursday but are interested.

YOUTH 4 YOUTH EVENT- Do you want to help/ take your young person?

“We are a group of young people working with the Kingswood Foundation and Ten Sing people to put on a showcase event for youth arts talent in the East Bristol/South Glos areas. We have so far raised over £26,000 for the event so it looks like it will be a big one (‘Lil Chris has been confirmed as a headline act).

The Youth 4 Youth event will be held on the 23rd September at the Kingswood Foundation. The day itself will have two parts. The afternoon will be workshops and a chance for any young people to have a go at dance, singing, graffiti art, circus skills etc. The evening will have local youth bands, comedians, theatre groups, dancers, filmmakers etc. showcasing their talent to an audience of up to 1000 people on a professional stage.

We are now looking for as many volunteers to perform (in any art form), be stewards (to help organise the day and get the event going), technicians, put out publicity (street teams will be handing out flyers, posters etc through the summer) and be on the organising group. If you’re interested please contact Sandy on 0117 947 7948 We need to hear back from you by the 14th August. Check out http://www.myspace.com/youth4youthbristol for more information on what we are after.”

Summer Playschemes – pass info on to families

A number of families have been saying that the summer holidays are a particularly tricky time. There are a number of playschemes in Bristol over the summer (see below to find those near you). The Park in Knowle has spaces in its playscheme for this summer, phone 907 7371 (I do not know how many spaces are available on the other schemes). The provision especially for disabled children is quite thin on the ground, but I’ve been assured that these schemes are inclusive and can apply for extra money to support disabled children appropriately. Hop Skip and Jump will be open for drop-ins, but parents will need to stay with children and this is specifically for disabled children (http://www.hopskipandjump.org.uk/pages/frnews.htm). Groups run by Special Friends are also run at Hop Skip and Jump and children can be left at these groups specialfriends@blueyonder.co.uk

Cinema Exhibitors’ Association Card – free cinema tickets for carers (parents or volunteers)

Please see the form attached and details below for how to apply for a carer’s card to accompany disabled children or adults to the cinema for free. See also http://www.ceacard.co.uk/ . This is a national card that can be used to verify that the holder is entitled to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema. To apply for the card, you (or the child you are caring for) will need to meet one or more of the following criteria:a) Be in receipt of the disability living allowance or attendance allowance.b) Be a registered blind person. The card is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. A processing fee of five pounds is chargeable per card. This is to be sent along with the completed application. If this is difficult, it maybe that Time2Share could help out if you are going to go to the cinema as a befriending activity (so contact us if the price is putting you off). This is a good value card as the price equivalent to one cinema ticket will give you unlimited cinema access as a carer (you will need to be with the paying disabled person obviously, and they keep the card!).

Participating cinemas in Bristol which I spotted on the site are:

CINEWORLD – www.cineworld.co.uk

ODEON CINEMAS LTD – www.odeon.co.uk

REELTIME CINEMAS LTD – www.reeltime-cinemas.co.uk

VUE ENTERTAINMENT – www.myvue.co.uk

A few of our young people have these cards already and they do come in useful. Please let me know of any other activities suitable for wet, weekday evenings!

Kids Club at Cineworld

Cineworld runs a Kids Club on Saturday mornings. If you turn up at 10am the child pays £1 and the carer pays £1. They choose between 3 films when they turn up (this week its Barnyard, The Last Mimsie and The Wild).

Phone 0871 200 2000 and speak to an operator if you want to know more
