Every Disabled Child Matters Update

We are delighted to announce that yesterday the government responded to EDCM’s calls for a right to short breaks, by creating a new legal duty on local authorities to provide short breaks to support families with disabled children. The duty has been described as a ‘historic moment’ in improving services for disabled children and their families – and we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all our supporters that have backed our calls for a clearer right to short breaks. Read our news story for more detail:
http://www.edcm.org.uk/shortbreaksduty

While this is a huge step forward, the new duty is not likely to go as far as creating a new legal right to short breaks for individual families. EDCM will continue to campaign – with your support – for further changes to the law.We would also like to say thank you to all those that have taken part in our winter fuel action by emailing their MP. Although the extension of winter fuel payments to families with young disabled children was not announced as part of the budget statement last week, EDCM is meeting with the Director of the government’s Child Poverty Unit this week to take this forward. We will keep you posted…
You can find out more at: http://www.edcm.org.uk/winterfuel

The progress on short breaks shows that your involvement in EDCM campaign actions has a crucial impact on government policy. Please visit our Get Involved page at http://www.edcm.org.uk/getinvolved to see how else you can help make change happen for disabled children and their families. All our supporters are also encouraged to email your MP through The Children’s Society website, asking them to support calls for disabled children in care to have access to independent advocacy, to ensure they can get their views across. Please go to:
http://www.childrenssociety.org.uk/campaigns

As always, if you have any questions about any of these actions or the campaign, please get in touchAll best wishes
Pam

Every Disabled Child Matters Spring Workshops

EDCM and Contact a Family are hosting further supporter workshops for Spring 2008. The workshops are designed primarily for parent supporters but all EDCM supporters are very welcome to attend. The workshops will give supporters a full update on the government’s ‘Aiming High for Disabled Children’ programme to transform disabled children’s services. Supporters will learn and share information on how to influence the change programme locally – just as over £400 million of new funding starts to be spent across England in the next three years.

Cinema Exhibitors’ Association Card – free cinema tickets for carers (parents or volunteers)

Please see the form attached and details below for how to apply for a carer’s card to accompany disabled children or adults to the cinema for free. See also http://www.ceacard.co.uk/ . This is a national card that can be used to verify that the holder is entitled to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema. To apply for the card, you (or the child you are caring for) will need to meet one or more of the following criteria:a) Be in receipt of the disability living allowance or attendance allowance.b) Be a registered blind person. The card is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. A processing fee of five pounds is chargeable per card. This is to be sent along with the completed application. If this is difficult, it maybe that Time2Share could help out if you are going to go to the cinema as a befriending activity (so contact us if the price is putting you off). This is a good value card as the price equivalent to one cinema ticket will give you unlimited cinema access as a carer (you will need to be with the paying disabled person obviously, and they keep the card!).

Participating cinemas in Bristol which I spotted on the site are:

CINEWORLD – www.cineworld.co.uk

ODEON CINEMAS LTD – www.odeon.co.uk

REELTIME CINEMAS LTD – www.reeltime-cinemas.co.uk

VUE ENTERTAINMENT – www.myvue.co.uk

A few of our young people have these cards already and they do come in useful. Please let me know of any other activities suitable for wet, weekday evenings!

Cycling – eggs-actly right for Easter!

With the Easter school holidays approaching, Life Cycle is offering the perfect solution for bored kids and stressed parents! They’re running special three-day cycle training courses to get 8 to 11 year olds out of the house and onto their bikes. They take place at Clifton in Bristol and at Keynsham. The courses run for two-and-a-half hours a day over three days. Instead of drilling children around traffic cones on school playgrounds, they engage the youngsters in an exciting, interactive way. They spend most of their time out on local roads sampling real-life traffic situations, learning how to “read the road”, and practising essential manoeuvres.LifeCycle ran similar courses during the February half-term and Mrs Mathews from Bath told us:

“I just wanted to send mine and my son’s thanks as he really enjoyed the cycle training course. He learnt a lot and he looked forward to attending every day and it kept him busy during the week off school. It was value for money and I would certainly recommend the course to others.”

There’s more information on our website at www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/events.php

Tandem acts of kindnessLife Cycle runs tandem rides for people who are blind or visually impaired. They call it Two’s Company. Earlier in the year they acquire three tandems at a knock-down price from a bike hire business that was closing down. Since then they’ve been offered three more by generous members of the public. They’ve also received small grants and donations towards the project from local businesses and from people like you. Folk have also come forward to offer their services as front-riders and the use of their own tandems for rides. We’re immensely grateful for the support received.

This generosity has enabled LifeCycle to set up a regular programme of rides, one a month throughout the year. Click this link www.lifecycleuk.org.uk/events.php to find out the routes, dates and times. If you are sight impaired, or if you have family members, friends or work colleagues who are, do tell them about Two’s Company.
