Cinema Exhibitors’ Association Card – free cinema tickets for carers (parents or volunteers)

Please see the form attached and details below for how to apply for a carer’s card to accompany disabled children or adults to the cinema for free. See also http://www.ceacard.co.uk/ . This is a national card that can be used to verify that the holder is entitled to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema. To apply for the card, you (or the child you are caring for) will need to meet one or more of the following criteria:a) Be in receipt of the disability living allowance or attendance allowance.b) Be a registered blind person. The card is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. A processing fee of five pounds is chargeable per card. This is to be sent along with the completed application. If this is difficult, it maybe that Time2Share could help out if you are going to go to the cinema as a befriending activity (so contact us if the price is putting you off). This is a good value card as the price equivalent to one cinema ticket will give you unlimited cinema access as a carer (you will need to be with the paying disabled person obviously, and they keep the card!).

Participating cinemas in Bristol which I spotted on the site are:

CINEWORLD – www.cineworld.co.uk

ODEON CINEMAS LTD – www.odeon.co.uk

REELTIME CINEMAS LTD – www.reeltime-cinemas.co.uk

VUE ENTERTAINMENT – www.myvue.co.uk

A few of our young people have these cards already and they do come in useful. Please let me know of any other activities suitable for wet, weekday evenings!

Kids Club at Cineworld

Cineworld runs a Kids Club on Saturday mornings. If you turn up at 10am the child pays £1 and the carer pays £1. They choose between 3 films when they turn up (this week its Barnyard, The Last Mimsie and The Wild).

Phone 0871 200 2000 and speak to an operator if you want to know more

Free Day @Explore Saturday 5th May

Free Explore Day

Bristol Free Trail

There are lots of free activities to do around Bristol. I have a really good book called ‘The Naked Guide to Bristol’ by Gil Gillespie. On page 150 there is a Free Trail which is actually a very full plan for a day in Bristol without spending any money. I wouldn’t recommend trying to do all of this in one day, but there are some good suggestions.

Free Trail

1) Windmill Hill City Farm - lots of animals and a cafe

(alternatively St Werburgh’s City Farm )

2) St Mary Redcliffe Church - find the Church Cat’s grave and the perpetual motion clock

3) The Industrial Museum – brilliant for anyone with a transport interest! (currently closed)

4) City docks – stroll around looking at the ss Great Britain (NB if you go in the ticket lasts a WHOLE YEAR), take a ferry if you can afford it. Keep an eye out for free events around the docks.

5) Architecture Centre - look out for relevant exhibitions

6) Millenium Square fountains – on warm days kids like to splash around (be careful of health and safety issues though!)

7) The Cathedral is quiet and peaceful with a relatively cheap cafe

8) The City Museum has changing exhibitions and if you go on the first Sunday of the month there  should be special children’s activities laid on.

9) Brandon Hill and Cabot Tower – Climb the tower, go to the play area, feed the squirrels nuts.

See also the Brunel Tour.

Ferry

Bristol Ferry Boat Companywww.bristolferry.com 927 3416

Take a boat trip around the Harbourside. You could combine this with a trip to the Industrial Museum (free); the SS Great Britain; the Watershed; the Arnolfini; or the Empire and Commonwealth Museum . See separate entries for details of these other attractions.

Time2Share discount: volunteers travel at child rate e.g. £2.80.

@Bristol

At-Bristolwww.at-bristol.org.uk 0845 345 1235

This is a good venue for a busy or curious child. It is also indoors so perfect for wet weekends. I would recommend only going to one section at a time, and coming back on a separate session to do the others.

You should be able to get into all the attractions free (say you’re a carer and show your Time2Share ID). The child you’re with can get an education rate, this is:

£4.45 for one attraction (e.g. Explore)

£7.50 for two attractions (e.g. Explore and Wildwalk)

£10.55 all 3 (Explore, Wildwalk and Imax)

I have discussed these discount directly with @Bristol, so let me know if they say anything different!
