New Titch Hiker’s Guide for the Summer

The latest version of the Titch Hikers Guide to Bristol is now out as a special summer edition (£2.99). We got a free copy in the office, because Time2Share is featured in the guide on page 134. If you’re interested in getting your own copy look at this link: http://www.freedomguide.co.uk/ (this also includes options to buy the other books in the series). Alternatively I can look up details for you using our copy, just email me on bristol@time2share.org.uk or phone into the office (941 5868). If I ever get the time to do it, I may post some of the most useful looking tips here…

Volunteer Induction and Social

We invite all volunteers who have not previously completed induction, and anyone who has said they are interested in becoming a volunteer. Please can you confirm if you are attending and which pizza toppings you prefer? Current pizza opinion is slanting towards vegetarian or pepperoni! Apologies if you have received a similar email through a different e-mail list, or if you have already replied (the number of non-replies was quite high which is why I’m writing again).

All volunteers are required to attend induction, so that you can gain a better understanding of why we do what we do, and we can clarify important issues such as child protection. The induction will also be a great place to meet other volunteers and to ask any questions you may have about volunteering. This induction is unusual because it is a whole day on a Saturday, rather than two Wednesday evening sessions. We are also piloting having a social lunch in the middle of the day, which will include free pizza (courtesy of Herbert’s Bakery). During lunch we will be joined by other volunteers, and you will have a chance to chat to them and gain from their experiences.
These are the details:

Saturday 19th January 2008 10am – 5pm Knightstone House, Portland Street, Kingsdown, Bristol

Bus No.s 20 and 21 drop off on Kingsdown Parade

Bus No.s 8 and 9 drop off on Cotham road.

Walking from the centre – The most direct (but steepest) way is to walk up Marlborough Hill besides the Bristol Royal Infirmary, which brings you out onto Kingsdown parade, turn left and then right, crossing the road, and go up Alfred place (in front of you).  Go to the end of Alfred place and turn right and it turns into Portland Street and Knightstone house is on your right opposite the car park for Kingsdown Sports centre. There is street parking available but please observe restrictions.Call me on my work mobile 07966 988 625 if you need further assistance on the day (I now only use this mobile for training, so please do not call this number at other times).

Invite letter to volunteers:

Dear Volunteers This session will cover the essential details you need to know as a Time2Share volunteer. It will increase your awareness of disability issues and ensure you are equipped with the correct knowledge to support you in your role as a volunteer with Time2Share.  Please attend the whole day (if you have previously attended half of the induction, you are welcome to attend the relevant half of the day).  You can also come just for lunch 1-2pm if you have completed induction already. We will be covering:

  • Why we exist and what we achieve
  • What is Befriending and what skills are important
  • Confidentiality issues and how they affect you
  • Child protection and abuse awareness – putting it into practice
  • Time2Share policies and guidelines

Even if you have already started volunteering it is important that you attend if you have not attended the full Induction before.  It is also a great way to meet other Time2Share volunteers and keep in touch with your co-ordinator who is always more than pleased to see you!  If you have difficulty attending please contact us to let us know.   We will be using Knightstone house on Portland street in Kingsdown opposite the Kingsdown leisure centre car park – there is a map on the reverse of this letter. ·        There is on street parking on the roads (Portland Street, Alfred place).  ·        The nearest bus stop is on Cotham Road south·        If you need further information please ring me.·        If you get lost on the day ring me on 07966 988625 (this mobile is not normally used). Best wishes Jenny Lyus

Volunteer Social?

A couple of you have suggested that it would be nice to meet up as a group. Unfortunately I don’t have enough work time to organise this. It does sound like a great idea though, so maybe you could set a time and place and invite everyone along? I would definitely like to come along.

Perhaps the Watershed would be a good, central place to meet up? What time would suit people? If you decide on the blog, I can email everyone else about it.

Volunteer Social?

The first comment from a volunteer on this blog was about organising a social meet up. If this is a popular idea, you will need to arrange it amongst yourselves but I will try to come (if you’d like me to!). Perhaps you could set a time and place and see who turns up?!
