Meet the Robinsons

Time Out review:

The time-travelling premise to Disney’s ‘Jetsons’-style sci-fi animation bears a faint resemblance to ‘Back to the Future’, with elements of ‘The Terminator’. It’s a frenetic enterprise, but it does at least address the spectre of adoption in a sensitive way. To date, dweebish orphan Lewis has been through 124 adoption interviews; his propensity for inventing things that go wrong is the reason for his latest rejection. Lewis’ life changes dramatically, however, when young Wilbur Robinson rocks up in his spaceship and whisks him off to the future, a high-rise, pastel-coloured floating world, where Lewis meets the space cadet’s nutty family. Meanwhile, in the wings is a Dick Dastardly-style figure…

The first 20 minutes of this competently animated kids’ adventure are entertaining enough. But thereafter, the plot fractures, the pace goes into overdrive and the jokes wear thin. Some loose ends are tied up, but what a convoluted journey. Check out the impressive 3D version.

Bristol Kite Festival

If you were dissapointed with the no-show at the Balloon Fiesta,then not to worry,the kite festival is on in two weeks time.

It takes place in Ashton Court over the weekend of 30th and 31 August,11 am-5 pm each day,free entry.

The kites always take off no matter what the weather,so there will be plenty to do.In addition to the regular kites,there will be the Japanese fighting kites and a free childrens kite making workshop.

WallE (Rating U)- I consider this the film of this summer. Beautiful and moving,with very little dialogue. A lot of the movie is open to interpretation and has a gentle soothing and hearfelt theme.

Kung Fu Panda (Rating PG) – Some nice animation and karate action.Story is a bit predictable – unknown panda dreams of becoming Kungfu master,but it is full of comedy and good animation.

Space chimps (Rating U)-This is what the reviews say “A goofy space opera that sends three U.S. chimptronauts rocketing to a galaxy, as they say, far, far away” and “It’s a perfectly acceptable family entertainment with cute monkeys, the usual message of self-empowerment and the eye-popping animation we’ve come to take for granted”

Bristol Harbour Festival

It’s time for this year’s Harbour Festival. The line up looks really good and it’s free. I know I’ll be disappointed to be missing Beth Rowley on Saturday evening. This is an ideal befriending outing as there’ll be something for all age groups and interests (unless the child you’re matched with hates noise or crowds!).

You can either ring and pre-book a slot, or come on in on the day and shop whilst you are there. There is also the cafe in the Better Food Cafe if you fancy a tasty Saturday treat whilst you are waiting. Bristol Fusion Dance will be holding free sessions over the next few weeks which are open to everyone to learn two urban fusion dance routines. In addition to the regular sessions there will be extra classes on:Sunday 6 July, 3-5pm, Easton Community Centre

Thursday 10 July, 6-8pm, The Old Fire Station, Broadmead

Friday 11 July, 10.30am-12.30pm; 1- 2.30pm; 4.30-6pm; 6.30-8pm at the Old Fire Station.

The dance routines will be performed on Saturday 12 July in the Haymarket in Broadmead at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. All participants are invited to perform and the routines will be rehearsed and taught on the day. Sun & sand explorer reinstated

“A train service, much loved by Bristol’s cyclists, is back on the rails. The Sun and Sand Explorer runs between Bristol Temple Meads and Weymouth every Saturday until the end of AugustA similar service used to run twice daily down to the south coast, but it was not included in the latest franchise agreement between the Department for Transport and First Great Western. However, following lobbying by disappointed sun seekers, First announced that it would reinstate the service during the summer months.

It’s a reminder of how rail travel used to be. The vintage diesel locomotives that haul the train are (gosh!) reliable. The old carriages have (gasp!) lots of space. Passengers get to enjoy (wow!) comfy seats and tables. And most amazing of all (get this!) there’s a humungous guard’s van that takes bicycles.

Cycling in Bristol

There was good news for Bristol cyclists last week, as a total of £22.8-million (half from government, half raised locally) will be invested in cycling initiatives over the next three years. Part of this investment will go towards the Hourbike scheme. This will be a Pay-as-you-go cycle hire scheme with pick up and drop off locations around Bristol. The first 1/2 hour will be free and then it will cost £1 an hour. See http://www.hourbike.com/hourbike/home.do to register for more information and to find out the details. This new scheme will start in September, and could provide an excellent befriending activity.

The Bristol Listings site maybe useful if you’re looking for something to do for a befriending outing. This is probably more suitable for the older young people as it’s mostly gigs etc. There even seems to be a category for free gigs (although I’m not sure how good the music is…). The site is associated with Suit Yourself Magazine, a local independent.

Get together? -Balloon festival

Dear all,

I have been volunteering for time2share for the past six months. I have met other volunteers during the initial induction, but not since then. I was wondering if anyone was interested in a get together/fun day out with the befrienders/children? We have the Funday/AGM coming up in the first weekend of July, but I’m also thinking of another get together the weekend of the Bristol Balloon festival (which is the 7th-10th August). It should be a fun day out with lots of activities for the children to enjoy – and watch the balloons take off! If anyone is intersted, perhaps we could organize a trip on one of the balloons as well for the children who are interested.
